Time flies

Wow! I can’t believe there are less than 50 days left in my Freshman year of high school. When I look back and reflect on this first year it is amazing to see how all my hard work has paid off. I have kept a 4.0 GPA and I am one test away from being done with my AP class, as far as the content piece goes.

One thing in these past 130 or so days of high school that has really impacted me is the girls’ golf team. This year, I played on the golf team and if I’m being honest, I was pretty nervous to try out. I hadn’t been golfing for too long, but it was something I really enjoyed doing. When I made the team I was overjoyed, but little did I know how much the team would impact my life. The team decided to do something this season we called “Big Sis-Little Sis”. Every upperclassman would have a freshman that they gave rides to, give meaningful advice and occasionally would golf with. My “Big Sis” and I were extremely close throughout the season and she was really a person that helped me to grow morally. I was shocked by how tight-knit our team became, everyone had each other’s backs, on the course and girls’ golf program at Enumclaw High School is amazing and I honestly can’t wait for next season!

As exciting as all of this is, there are more important and exciting events coming up fast in my life. This June, I am going with my youth group on a mission trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. The mission trip is held by Youthworks, a company built by volunteers who give their time to leading mission trips. I have been on several of these trips, and they are truly life-changing.

Almost there!

The progress we have made on our project is incredible! The different group’s responsibilities are all merging together, and it’s pretty amazing to watch. Our project is less than a month away and I must say I am pretty excited to watch the impact we are going to have on this community. My group is applying for a Rotary grant and we are hoping to match the amount with our Thrivent Financial  grant($250). Last week, our secured chef, Chef Ky came into our class and gave us some ideas on how much the food would cost, and what the best ingredients to purchase for those meals would be. Me and two of my group members went to the Enumclaw Middle School and checked out the culinary room, (which is the room we will be using in our project) and it was so amazing to look at that room and know, that in less than a month, it will be transformed into the workplace of a life changing project. This past week, our class was featured in the Courier Herald, our local newspaper, and it was very empowering to know that our community is taking notice of what we are doing in our classroom. I am so excited to see how this project turns out, I love knowing that we are making a difference in our community!

The main goal of our project is to educate those who are food insecure. This is a short video explaining what it means to be food insecure. Enjoy!

Our project is coming to life!

We have been making great progress on the We Nourish cooking class! When you get approved for a grant from Thrivent Financial, you get all of your supplies in a package that comes in the mail, and I received mine this week. It was a huge relief to our group because this grant is going to be our main source of money to provide food for the class. I am so happy to finally be putting all our plans into action because I have seen poverty in my life. I have gone on many mission trips to Skagit Valley, Washington, San Ramon, Nicaragua, and Lame Deer, Montana. I also have plans to go on another this June to New Orleans, Louisiana. It is such a great feeling to help people in the world who need it. I am so excited to finally help out with poverty in my own town. It has been so cool to see all of our plans being put into action. I feel like before these past two weeks this cooking class was only an idea, and now I can see it transforming into reality before my eyes. IMG_0322.JPG

This is how the grant looked when I received it in the mail.

My first blog post

Hi, my name is Maya Rismiller and I am a freshman at Enumclaw high school. Right now, my AP Human Geography class is planning a cooking class called “We Nourish”. The main idea of this cooking class is to to educate families in our community who are food insecure on how to make healthy and affordable meals their whole family can enjoy. Our class has split up into various groups, each group has a purpose and is in charge of a certain aspect relating to the “We Nourish” class we are putting on. One group is the group in charge of the main parts of the class, like the date, the facility and the chef. Another group is the education group. They are in charge of planning the meals we will serve and doing the research as to which meals would be the healthiest while still being affordable. We have another group, the social media and promotion group, they are in charge of getting the word about the cooking class out (which by the way will take place on April 11th at 5:00 at Enumclaw Middle School.) The fourth group is in charge of getting cooking supplies, and the last group is the group in charge of purchasing the food for the cooking class. This is the group that I am a part of. We are working on finding an effective and creative way to raise money or food for the class. I have recently applied for a grant from Thrivent financial for $250. I cannot wait to grow and educate myself and others through this project. I am so excited to make my mark on this world.
